Desktop Power Strip is essential for modern workspaces, but using them incorrectly can pose serious fire and shock hazards. Follow this comprehensive guide to ensure you're using yours safely:
1. Choose the Right Power Strip:
· Certification is Key: Look for certification marks from recognized testing laboratories like UL (US), ETL (US), CSA (Canada), or CE (Europe). This ensures it meets basic safety standards.
· Surge Protection (Recommended): Especially for electronics (computers, monitors, printers). Protects against voltage spikes. Check the Joule rating – higher is better for sensitive equipment. Note: Surge protectors wear out over time; replace if the indicator light goes out or after a major surge.
· Adequate Capacity (Crucial!): Check the Amperage (A) and Voltage (V) ratings (usually 15A/120V in North America). Calculate the total wattage (W) of devices you'll plug in: Watts = Volts x Amps. Never exceed the strip's rated wattage (typically 1800W for 15A/120V).
